But I DO still remember what you wrote, here are my answers: A1. Wait until you are 18; A2. Keep begging your mom until she gives in; A3. Go to a reputable dog shelter. Be a volunteer. After a couple of months, your mom and you yourself will find out if you are RESPONSIBLE. A4. After your mom's dog got hit by a truck and yours ran away, I can understand how your mom feels and fears. But one more dog being adopted is one more dog being saved, isn't it? It took us (my sister and my brother and myself) several years to persuade our dad that we could actually be responsible dog owners. I think it takes time to prove to your dad that you can be a responsible dog owner. Keep trying! Sad stories about stray dogs in Taiwan are TRUE, just like NEVER ENDING STORIES. Many dog people are doing their best to save the dogs while some shameless dog owners go on dumping their dogs. I wonder if there are stray dogs in Singapore? What do you do about them? Yes, the proud and beautiful Japanese Spitz in that picture is ANNANN herself. You can check on her 7 photoalbums spitz80.freeyellow.com/photopage.html. We took many pictures of ANNANN for the past unforgettable 15 years. A Toy American Eskimo and a Japanese Spitz are both sturdy, they got SIMILAR temperament, SIMILAR size, and their coats are both thick and white, that means you have to vacuum frequently wherever a JS goes inside your house. ANNANN did not live in a cage or a dog house. She was allowed to enter any rooms she preferred. So we had to do the vacuum thing almost everyday. ANNANN did not have ordinary doggy odor but, her body had a scent of a baby. That's rare. (she took a bath every two weeks) I am not sure if other JS got the same peculiarity. Let me repeat what I answered you in the previous message. Many American people are interested in JS but it is VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND A REPUTABLE JS BREEDER IN THE USA. I have a suggestion: You can send an E-mail to CAM camllpm@hotmail.com asking her from where she got "SULTAN". CAM is very FRIENDLY and she LOVES DOGS. She lives in Chicago with her "BOYS" (SULTAN the JS, ROSTAM the Husky, NEPHI the Rabbit, FATBOY the Turtle). You didn't leave your E-mail. I hope you will come back and read this message. As you might have known, ANNANN was adopted, not bought from a pet shop or breeders. According to our tradition, we gave ANNANN's former owner a small pack of brown-sugar and a small pack of rice-noodle in return. That's about US$1.00 dollar. To us, she's priceless. You live in USA. As far as I know, it is difficult to find a Japanese Spitz in your country. Maybe you can find one at animal shelters. Otherwise, you have to import one from other countries or get a Toy American Eskimo instead (looks just like JS with similar temperament). Thank god everything turned out fine. We used to live in an apartment when ANNANN came. She was not so over-alert as people thought the JS breed would be, she did not bark without a reason at all, so our neighbors never complained. She was stout and sturdy, not as delicate as Poms, well, that was perfect for the first-time owners who knew so little about dogs like us. While you are doing the research, I suggest that you visit Snowy more often and spend some hours with her, indoors and outdoors. That will help you understand more about JS. My Maggie girl looks just like her but Maggie's nose is all pink now. It's always been a topic of humor with the family, that cute little nose of hers, as it was all black when I got her at about 6 months. I was told she was a Spitz mix so maybe that explains it, but I'm certain that they didn't know what a rare gem she was because I bought her at a pet store of all places and for only a mere $29.00. I couldn't put a price on her now if I had to. It wasn't until just recently that I found a few JS breeders website and was absolutely delighted to find that I will be able to have another dog like her. She's the best! She's just not a dog, she's so much more human than canine, but only you would know that. Maggie is 12 now and I hope she lives to be 100! Kiss a pooch! No scanner? Oh... Please send us pics of Crystal (and you too) as soon as you get a scanner or if your friends can scan the pics for you. Is Crystal about 1'8" 60lb? ANNANN is about 1'2" 15lb and she looks just like a mini Samoyed. American Eskimo and Samoyed and Japanese Spitz dogs, they are probably cousins. Just like Crystal, ANNANN listens to what we say. We try not to say certain words at the wrong time. Like words beginning with a "tou" sound such as "tou-tou", in Taiwanese, "tou-tou" means LET'S GO OUT AND PLAY. And some words beginning with a "shi" sound, because in Chinese, "shi" means "wash". ANNANN knows "shi-zau" means TO TAKE A BATH and "shi-jau" means TO WASH HER FEET, she never liked taking a bath or her feet being washed. Oh, we mix Taiwanese and Chinese when we speak. Sometimes she tilts her head when she's confused or she doesn't understand what we are talking about. Dogs are so cute when they tilt their heads! You read all ANNANN's episodes!? Wow! One more dog lover who not only likes ANNANN's pics but also her stories. It's much more difficult for us to write the episodes than to take ANNANN's photos. ANNANN is a Japanese Spitz, no doubt about it because: 1. Her vet said so. 2. Taiwan was occupied by Japan for 50 years (1895-1945), the Japanese immigrants brought their JS dogs with them to Taiwan. Before that, most dogs in Taiwan were "Taiwanese Brown Dogs" (errrr... we are not sure if we've got the name right in English...) that still exist now, very strong, very loyal and very intelligent. Simple, isn't it? However, we are aware that ANNANN is not 100% pure because the hair at the top of her ears is kind of light brown. Her vet said that's because one or two of ANNANN's great great great.... grand parents were not pure JS. As for Nick... Hmmm... Wait until he becomes an adult, it'll be much easier to tell if he is a JS or an American Eskimo when he's grown up. You cannot imagine how excited we are! We've been trying to help re-homing dear old Efe for four months since last October. Sadi Nalci and we received several E-mails from around the world telling us they'd like to adopt Efe but, things didn't work out as well as we expected. It hurts every time we check on ANNANN's website seeing Efe's ad still there..... We consider that the USA is Efe's number one choice because, we're told that pets don't have to go through long-term quarantine in the United States. I never fail to visit your site- especially since Im keeping track of Efe's case. I get teary eyed just staring at his picture and thinking of his plight. He looks so much like my male spitz Dexter. I pray that they had not done anything drastic yet no matter how impatient they've become... I don't know why I always get so emotional where dogs are concerned. Sometimes I just close my eyes because I can't bear to see more of them uncared for, unloved, unwanted. On 01/07/2002, we changed the contents of EFE's webpage and put an "URGENT!!!" flashing stamp on EFE's ad after a very kind human family in Greece (where wouldn't be a long journey for EFE to go by airplane) emailed us three times. They told us they've emailed EFE's human Sadi Nalci asking him about EFE. Sadi's answers made them feel that Sadi was "up to his neck with his despair about EFE"... Well, we still keep in touch with this Greek family by email but we are certain that they are not suitable for adopting an old dog like EFE. Their beloved cat just died 3 months ago. What they really need is a puppy or a kitty. We don't know what else we can do to help re-homing EFE. We really don't know... Let's hope for the best. ANNANN is an absolutely optimistic brave lady. She is our ROLE MODEL (a dog being humans' role model!?) no matter what people said, "Come on, ANNANN is just a dog!" or "You stupid dog people, ANNANN can't talk, if she could she would tell you how terribly she felt about her illness..." Who said ANNANN couldn't talk? She told us with her eyes and her body language, "It's a piece of cake, don't worry about me, I'll get well very soon!" No matter how ill she was, she ate and slept and played a lot as always. She is happy and healthy this winter, we let her wear her muffler and her pink sweater indoors and outdoors. She'll be fine :-) We are aware some people in the Philippines eat dog meat, some Korean people and some Taiwanese people do, too! Our government should do something to ban this brutality. We had a real scare with rhino, He was attacked by a neigbors pit bull. I think he was trying to protect me-the dog came to my front door and I opened when I heard Rhino crying at the door, thinking it was my friend. He had 2 surgerys and was very sick for awhile but he is back to himself now. I think his thick mane probably saved his life. The dog had him by the neck for about 7 minutes before we could get the dog off him. He has been such a good dog and has always protected my cats(he breaks up any fights a neighbor cat may start) and my kids as well! I wish I could help sadi out I hope he finds a home soon!! Since we launched ANNANN's website, we received several emails from the USA asking us the same question you asked. We are sorry but we don't know any reputable JS breeders in the USA. However, we are told that in the USA, importing a Japanese Spitz isn't a problem. And you know what? You can practically pick a mixed stray JS home on the streets here in Taiwan. Why? Taiwan was annexed by Japan till 1945 for 50 years. At then, many Japanese people kept JS as pets and that's why we got so many JS here in Taiwan.
We suggest that you go to ANNANN's webpage "Save Stray Dogs In Taiwan" where we posted URLs of some reputable animal-rescue-sites (all located in Taiwan). Most of them are in Chinese but don't worry, we Taiwanese can read and write English emails. Just send those sites an email. Maybe you can find a JS you love in Taiwan and bring her/him home. Just last week, i went to say hi to our neighbor's dog only to find out that he was already dead. He was suffering from skin disease so they decided to get rid of him by hitting him in the head with a pole. Some guys then ate him.(Sigh). Its difficult to start a project stray dogs who are on their own. like the one you do there in saving dogs because we still have to contend with basic issues like child abuse and poverty here in our country. Only a few will probably care to understand my cause. so just i'm doing small things like feeding stray dogs in our neighborhood and adopting lost kittens now and then. Dear Deedee and Happy,
We got a very small backyard. Veeeeeeery small. But it seems that some stray cats (about 5 or more) in our neighborhood think it's cozy and warm. Unlike Ginny, ANNANN doesn't like cats and she's obviously not happy about this backyard thing but, since she's not interested in our backyard (she likes to go to the National Park, millions of times larger than our tiny little backyard, you know), so we let the stray cats come and go as their shelter whenever they like (oh, the fense is too high for ANNANN to jump over but it's a piece of cake to cats). Sometimes when we got doggie bags in our car on our way home, we give them to stray dogs who are alone (probably driven out by their stray dog groups). HAPPY, we are very HAPPY to know you are helping stray cats and dogs too. Mother Earth belongs not only to mankind but also to all beings in this world! Let's keep helping them to survive!!! Let's get serious. Since we launched ANNANN's website, we received several emails from the USA asking us the same question you asked. We are sorry but we don't know any reputable JS breeders in the USA. However, we are told that in the USA, importing a Japanese Spitz isn't a problem. And you know what? You can practically pick a mixed stray JS home on the streets here in Taiwan. Why? Taiwan was occupied by Japan till 1945 for 50 years. At then, many Japanese people kept JS as pets and that's why we got so many JS here in Taiwan. We suggest that you go to ANNANN's webpage "Save Stray Dogs In Taiwan" where we posted URLs of some reputable animal-rescue-sites (all located in Taiwan). Most of them are in Chinese but don't worry, we Taiwanese can read and write English emails. Just send those sites an email. You know what? We didn't know the puppy (ANNANN) we were going to adopt was a female Japanese Spitz. All that we knew was that a high school teacher got a litter of puppies and he wanted to give them away, because he couldn't afford it. When our dad arrived at the teacher's house, he saw ANNANN's parents and that was the moment he realized that the puppy we were going to adopt was a female JS puppy! Hello tough guy! Rafa, you think you are the king, right? Our ANNANN thinks she is the queen. Why? Because ANNANN always "looks down" on other dogs except Poms (she has a crush on male Poms), even dogs five times her size. Why? Because we always hold ANNANN up high when facing dogs she doesn't like, and that makes ANNANN feel like she is more than five feet tall, while those dogs she looks down upon are "only" one to three feet tall... Silly, huh?

I know they have two coats and are decendents from the Samoyed, but how often do they shed and how bothersome are the hairs??? Is it all over the house? Here is our advice according to our experience with ANNANN alone.
In spring and autumn, ANNANN's hair falls all over wherever she goes, no matter how often we comb her coat. We have to vacuum our house and our car almost everyday. And no, JS aren't delicate, not as delicate as Poms. Take a look at ANNANN's photos, she is a JS of sturdy build. She is tough, strong and playful! However, ANNANN doesn't like playing with dogs three four times her size (ANNANN is 16 pounds; she's a "pudge", just like Ivan Rodriguez). Why? Please ask her yourself. But that doesn't mean other JS can't get along with large dogs like Rostam. You can take Rostam to the park and let him play with small dogs. If those small dogs aren't injured, let Rostam play with the JS you'd like to keep. If this JS plays happily with Rostam and isn't injured, well, this is the one :) ANNANN & CHEN |

She's such a cute dog...and very sweet! I noticed this particular trait in their breed. My dog, Dee-Dee (a japanese spitz also) likes to be cuddled and treated like a baby all the time. But of course I have to agree that Annan is cuter than her. Dee-Dee has a chronic liver problem and has bouts of vomiting, listlessness and lack of appetite. She has her medication and I'm just keeping my finger crossed that she'll survive this. My world seems to revolve on my pets that honestly, I'm not prepared to loose any one of them. I already lost my very first pet(a stray cat) a couple of years ago. This was the reason why i was at first hesitant when Dee-Dee was given to me. I was scared of loving a pet again...I noticed that you're so close with Annan. What are your thoughts on losing a pet? Are you also prepared for it, since needless to say death is definite anyway? Keep up the advocacy on animal's welfare. Few people have that level of awareness, especially where I'm from. Dogmeat is even considered as delicacy here. She frequents the vet's clinic but that never bothers her, and that can never stop her from eating well, playing happily and having fun. In one word, ANNANN is BRAVE. First of all, please keep in mind that we are not professional veterinarians, so what we can give you is our advice according to our experience. Every spring and autumn when ANNANN is having a new coat, her old hair falls all over wherever she goes, such as our rooms and cars. We have to vacuum those places almost everyday. When we give ANNANN a bath, much of her old hair comes off and that's quite scary! Well, not as much as HALF of her hair, but pretty much. At the same time, we can feel her new hair is growing, short but thick..... If Beauty is not having a skin disease (you could actually SEE and SMELL the disease if she had it), if her urine and excrements look normal, and if she eats and sleeps and plays as always, please be patient with her. Soon she will turn out a fair lady! But if she keeps losing her hair and looks ill, all that she got is you and only you can help her so please take her to the vet at once. ANNANN & CHEN |

We don't use any cleansing liquid or medicine to clean ANNANN's eye area. We wipe her face and her chest with wet paper napkins, including her upper eyelids and lower eyelids, every time after she finishes her meal. And we always wash her face, including her muzzle and her eye area, every time ANNANN has a bath. We work very carefully around ANNANN's eye area, and we don't let the shampoo go into her eyes. But sometimes it goes in and ANNANN's eyes look like rabbit's eyes... ANNANN let us do this because she got used to it since she was just a puppy. If we didn't clean ANNANN's eye area, her lower eyelids would have sticky tears running down and turn reddish, too! We are not sure if your Beauty will let you do this, but we hope this information will help!

Japanese Spitz dogs ARE great! But we also admit that they aren't perfect. Why? For example, ANNANN's humans hardly wear dark colour clothes(black, navy blue, etc.) in spring and autumn, when she is having a new coat. We groom her coat regularly but that doesn't help much. There are many homeless dogs in the park, too! They like to play around, just like us. But sometimes they got beaten up and sent away and never came back. I wish they went to the Rainbow Bridge peacefully. Some humans are trying to save the homeless dogs in Taiwan, but there are more than 2,000,000 of them need to be rescued. Tough job! All these years, ANNANN always sleeps with my sister Celine or me or anybody else, in anybody's bed. She even got her own summer blanket and her winter quilt! In fact, ANNANN is allowed to sit and walk and run and eat and sleep anywhere she prefers in our house. You see, your family and our family are really real dog lovers!
There are many people doing whatever they can to save homeless dogs in Taiwan. But there are more people who do heartless things to the creatures we call them "men's best friends". We couldn't help wondering what Hoshi looked like so we visited your site and went through your every webpage. Hahaha!!!
